Stamp Collecting – A Remarkable Hobby For Young And Old

What do you think of when stamp collecting comes to mind? Some yawn and move on to other potential hobbies, but there is actually a lot to like about stamp collecting. It is easy to get absorbed in the world of stamps once you learn a little about it. You can use it as a hobby that adds enjoyment to your life or you could learn how to collect and sell stamp collections for some extra cash.

American stamps are very popular to collect all over the world, and people like to see what different and unusual stamps they can add to their collections. The first ever stamp was produced in 1840, which was the Penny Black, and this was issued in Great Britain. This incredible stamp had a picture of Queen Victoria on the face and had no perforations.

The idea of stamp collecting caught on with some shortly after that first stamp was released in Great Britain. It picked up in popularity in the 1860′s, especially with younger kids looking for a hobby to kill time. The Penny Black stamp is worth a lot of money today if you can get your hands on one that has never been used. Most people who enjoy stamp collecting will have at least one used Penny Black in their Stamp Catalogue, but they are not nearly as desirable or valuable.

While stamp collecting was initially made popular with the younger generations, many adults have picked up the hobby through the years. Unfortunately, the hype in the adult world has died down considerably. This is a bad thing since there are fewer stamp collections being created, but it’s a good thing for those interested in starting this hobby. The decrease in interest has led to a decrease in prices for collectible stamps.

American stamps are equally popular as English ones, and the first US stamp was produced in 1866. There are many different commemorative stamps to collect, and although these are often mass produced they are great to have in your collection. There is a vast array of different dealers and collectors available to help you find the stamps. Stamp collecting is very popular on the Internet, and there are numerous websites dedicated to stamps.

There are several pieces of equipment that you will need to participate with stamp collecting to ensure the stamps remain in great condition. You will need Stamp Collecting Books or Stamp Albums with clear plastic pockets to place the stamps inside. Stamp tongs are very useful to be able to handle the stamps with care, and place them easily inside the album. A magnifying glass is also very handy especially if your eyesight is not perfect.

Once you start purchasing stamps or receiving them for free, you simply put them into the plastic pockets and label them according to your own system. There is no clear cut way to store or display your stamps, so do it in a manner that suits you. Some collectors go by the age of the stamp or the country it was produced in. If you don’t have the money to pay for stamps when you first start stamp collecting, consider asking others if they have any to spare or finding other ways to get some for free.

Older family members may have interesting and unique stamps to share with you, and you never know what surprises and gems you will uncover. If you are looking for certain stamps such as New Zealand Stamps or rare issues, online auction sites are perfect. No matter how you go about stamp collecting it is guaranteed to bring you years of entertainment and enjoyment.
